  1.  This book is a biography of Muybridge, but it’s also something more.  Describe the something more.
  2. What does this book tell us about the history of the American West and the history of California in particular?
  3. Why should we care whether all four legs of a horse ever get off the same time when it’s trotting?

All schedule changes have been made on the syllabus now.  There are too many to list here, so you’ll just have to read it again.

I will say one thing here though. I actually found where I had the Stross/Freeburg paper due. It was badly worded, but I originally intended to get final paper copies to be due in class on 10/14.  They’re now due 10/26.

Maybe somebody can finally help me experiment with this before then so as to return the favor?

Freeberg Questions

Answers due on blogs by the start of class, Wednesday 10/2:

  1. What did you learn about Edison from Freeberg that you didn’t learn from Stross?
  2. What exactly made setting up an electrical delivery system so much more difficult than perfecting the light bulb?
  3. When exactly do you think electrical lighting became so commonplace that Americans started to take it for granted? Explain the reasoning for your answer.

PS  Library Day #2 is Monday, 9/28 so you don’t need to have the Freeberg book read until Wednesday, 9/30.

Stross Questions

The answers to these should be up on your blogs by class time on 9/18/15:

  1. Does Stross think Edison was a good businessman (as opposed to being a good inventor)?  Explain.
  2. Why did Edison treat his immediate family (especially his wives) the way he did?
  3. Did Thomas Edison control the nature of his own fame or did the press do more to shape the public perception of him? Explain.

Painter Questions

Answers are due on your blogs at the start of class on Friday, September 4th:

  1.  How does Painter describe the relationship between economics and politics during this period? Is it a functional relationship or could stand to be improved?  If so, how?  Explain.
  2. How does Painter integrate the concept of race into the overall economic theme of her book?
  3. Is World War I a continuation of the the trends that Painter describes in teh rets of her book or is it a break with what comes before?  Explain.
