1. According to Bates, what made Reagan’s rhetoric so successful?

2. Why did Reagan take a position on Vietnam after the war had ended?

5. Is Bates making too much over nothing in this book or is Reagan’s rhetoric a really important subject? Explain.

1 and 2. Explain the relationship between industrialization and two of the following other historical developments: The Labor Question, Immigration, Urbanization and/or the Closing of the Frontier.

3. If you had to name the most important person for determining the course of industrialization during this era, who would that be and why?

4. Why didn’t the government do more to mitigate the adverse effects of industrialization and to spread its benefits to a greater share of the population?
